Co-Owned Neighbourhoods on York Central YORK DESIGN WEEK

MY YORK CENTRAL

Big ideas emerged from the My York Central discussion. That York Central should be ‘a community made through exchange’, a place where housing is forever affordable, where people and play come before cars, and with public spaces which catalyses York’s creativity and innovation. Ever since those ideas emerged we’ve been having discussions about how to bring them to life on York Central. We’ve been asking how might we design a neighbourhood where the economic, social relationship as well as the buildings embody these ideas. The working title we’re using to hold these ideas is a Co-Own Neighbourhood.

  • Can we design at once new built environment, social relations and an economy?

  • Can we proactively use the wealth that exists in York (socially, culturally and financially) to address inequalities?

  • What are the precedents for this? Are there developers who can help us make this happen?

  • How can we draw together different legal and financial vehicles – from community land trust, co-housing to community investment share issues?

Join the discussions, hear from innovative projects elsewhere and help shape the next steps for this big idea for York Central.

Lotte Inch Gallery: All in the Detail Exhibition Preview Evening

Meet renowned ceramicist Chris Keenan and photographic-artist Fleur Olby, as Lotte Inch Gallery launches this exciting exhibition of work by two internationally acclaimed creatives. Refreshments served from 6pm and kindly supplied by Hotel du Vin & Bistro, York.

Exhibition runs until 16th November 2019.

Lotte Inch Gallery is a small but perfectly formed art gallery specialising in British studio ceramics and contemporary fine art. Established in 2015, the gallery showcases some of the best of the country’s emerging and established artists, designers and makers.

This exhibition is one in a programme of regularly changing shows, which bring to York, art and design-led work by nationally and internationally renowned figures. Both ceramicist Chris Keenan, and photographer-artist Fleur Olby will be here for the opening of this brilliant show and will talking about their practice to those that want to discover more.

Chris Keenan makes iconic, beautifully glazed pots for domestic spaces. His signature tenmoku and celadon glaze combinations paired with finely formed Limoges porcelain are a beauty to (be)hold . This actor-turned potter began his ceramics career as an apprentice to Edmund de Waal in 1995 and has worked from his own studio in London since 1998. Since then, his work has become more and more technically refined and is sought after by many collectors. There are examples of his work in private collections across both the UK and internationally, including the V&A, The Ashmolean Museum, The contemporary Art Society in London and Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, Japan.

Established in London, Fleur Olby’s work has been published, commissioned and exhibited internationally, most recently in the National Museum of Gdansk, Poland. Now based in North-Yorkshire, her practice draws on both her past work as a commercial and still-life photographer in the city and the nature with which she surrounds herself today. ‘Velvet Black’ the series on display as part of this show in York addresses the historical and present-day collecting and tending of plants. The first publication of this particular body of work is housed in the collection of artists’ books at the V&A National Art Library.

All in the Detail | Chris Keenan & Fleur Olby runs from Friday 25th October – Saturday 16th November 2019. Open Thursday -Saturday 10am – 5pm. Or by appointment.
